As always the truth of their capabilities is somewhere between the hype and the criticism - but they will change the future of image provision.

All images on this page were generated by DALL-E, alongside notes to guide you through some initial questions.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) generated images and art has come to the fore recently, in particular with DALL-E, from OpenAI. These generators can 'create' images from natural language in text.

AI Image Generation / DALL-E

Will AI replace photography?!

Let's be clear - if you require images of your buildings, products, or people - these need to be photographed!

However, if you require stock photos of a generic item, say a keyboard, as in this example - AI generation may be the way to go because the limit is your imagination.

What about Commercial Rights?

Here we quote from the DALL-E terms:

'You own the images you create with DALL·E, including the right to reprint, sell, and merchandise'.

As always there are a few common sense restrictions, but this is the key one:

You may remove the DALL·E signature if you wish, but you may not mislead others about the nature of the work. For example, you may not tell people that the work was entirely human generated or that the work is an unaltered photograph of a real event.

What can the images be of?

Anything! They can be photo-realistic as in this example of a photograph of a person who of course doesn't really exist.

Equally they can be avant-garde and ridiculous, as constrained by the imagination.

What about the style?

So this is the other huge benefit - digital art can be in any style - as with this 3D model of an Egyptian guitarist!

Images can be generated in any art or graphic design style. From Van Gogh or Renaissance Religious art to 3D modelling.

How can we help?

If you're tempted to dip your toe into the world of AI image generation - we can help you with:

  • Getting the images right takes time and effort. The style, angle, lighting, even the camera and lens all need to be considered just as in 'real' photography.

  • AI images have a small resolution for technical reasons, we can upscale them professionally.

  • AI details and faces can still have considerable challenges in getting them to look natural and realistic.

  • A 'hybrid' method where real images can be uploaded into an AI Generator and then amended and extended with additional frames.

  • Legal restrictions with regard to recognised individuals, products and items.
